The St. Augustine History Museum
While visiting the oldest city make the St. Augustine History Museum one of your stops. The museum will take you through a 400 year time line from the founding of St. Augustine by Pedro Menendez de Aviles to the present. You walk through the halls of this neat little place to see every country that has ruled over this part of the United States at one time or another, including the Spanish, the English, and the French. The History Museum ticket can be purchased alone on site for just $6.00, or if you are aboard the trolleys, the ticket comes complimentary as it is coordinated with the history learned on the tour. Through the museum you are able to visualize the narrated information.
Many of the artifacts in the museum were discovered by an exhibition team. You can even touch some of the recent artifacts dug up from other sites in Florida by archaeologists. One of the best displays the museum has to offer is an actual Spanish sunken treasure, found off the coast of Florida. The displays show some of the remarkable Spanish items that were carried to and from St. Augustine in those days.
The museum also features theTimucan Indian Village, which takes you back in time to those early days when Aviles first discovered this part of Florida.
The museum even takes you back to the Revolutionary War and the role St. Augustine played during these years. Many of the artifacts displayed in this part of the museum show you the history, weapons, clothing and utensils used by the soldiers from the southern states.
The tour itself is self-guided. The museum is open daily from 9:00 am until 5:30pm and is located just to the right of Gator Bobs Gift Shop at the sight of the Old Jail and the Oldest Store Museum.
