St Augustine's 450th Commemoration and the St Augustine Record Host Contest

St Augustine, Florida is such a special place. Founded in 1565 we are of course the oldest, continued-occupied settlement in the US. Our city receives national attention frequently for our historic preservation, our magnificent buildings and architecture, as being one of the “top prettiest towns in the US”, a place to visit during the holidays for its famous light display, and much more. Our city’s anniversary in 2015 is getting closer and the 450th Commemoration would like to give the opportunity for people to share their stories. Our city is so full of history and possesses a unique charm like no other, but what makes it even more special is the people who live and work here along with our many visitors. To celebrate, St Augustine’s 450th Commemoration along with the St Augustine Record is conducting a photo contest, essay contest and video contest. So not only will you have the opportunity to share your story of the oldest city, you could win a cash prize for it.

Here’s How!

Entries for all three contests can be submitted online through The St. Augustine Record at http://www.staugustine.com/. Entries are also accepted by mail to P.O. Box 210 ;St. Augustine,FL 32085.

Entries will be accepted from July 16 to August 16, 2012. Only one entry per person per contest will be accepted. If multiple entries are submitted per contest, then the first entry received will be accepted. The top five entries per contest will be selected by a judging panel from August 17-30. The top five entries will be posted online at www.staugustine.com for the public to vote for its favorite photos, essays and videos from September 7-21. The winners will be announced on September 28. The City of St. Augustine will make the determination as to the winners based on the tally of public vote and the results as determined by the City of St. Augustine shall be final.

Prizes
The grand prize winner of the photo contest, essay contest and video contest will each receive $450. The second place winner of each contest will receive $350. The third place winner of each contest will receive $250. The fourth and fifth place winners of each contest will receive $100. The prize money is a contribution from the City of St. Augustine’s 450th fund.

About St Augustine’s 450th Year Commemoration

The year 2012 marks the beginning to the 4 year long celebration known as the 450th Commemoration. The series of events commemorate significant moments in the history of Florida, theUnited States and Spain.

  • 2012 is the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Spanish Constitution.
  • 2013 is the Quincentennial (500th) Anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida.
  • 2014 marks 50 years since the ratification of the Civil Rights Act.
  • 2015 is the 450th Anniversary of Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles founding of the city ofSt. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the Continental United States.
