St Augustine’s Oldest School House Recently Hosted “1513 Garb and Gear” Event
St Augustine’s Oldest Wooden School House and Gardens recently hosted a “Garb and Gear” event in celebration of Florida’s 500 Year Anniversary. St Augustine residents, visitors, local historians, licensed tour guides, reenactors, and many downtown business owners were present for the event this year. Participants were dressed in Colonial Spanish garb allowing the guest to experience the look and feel of items commonly worn and used in an authentic Colonial Spanish Florida setting. Guest speakers were on site and various items were on display; including historic weapons, history books and other information from the specific time period.
The owner of the Oldest School House and Gardens also the host of this event was extremely excited about the turnout and the fact that so many are interested in becoming involved in Florida’s 500 year anniversary. Next year’s celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida is certainly anticipated and is expected to be immersed in history, authenticity, and character.

Participants in this event will enjoy the entire day of hands on training and education regarding the specific time period and will event be awarded a certificate of completion at the end of the day. Stay tuned for further details and times.
